•Innovation intermediaries are a constantly evolving organisational form or system actor.•Digitalisation has provided both opportunities and threats to innovation intermediaries in terms of the products they generate and deliver.•The rise of AI will in particular change the ways innovation intermediaries operate in this new environment.•Anew typology of innovation intermediaries is provided in this new digital paradigm of intermediation.
