Abstract: According to the World Intellectual Property Organization and World Trade Organization, a novelty item includes new features that are not part of the background of existing knowledge in the technical field. We start from the idea that the concept of object, processes, organizations or markets, is innovative when there is an occurrence of a hybridizing-process of previously independent knowledge backgrounds, after which, new identities emerge on a new unique one. We propose a general theory to design such hybridizations of knowledge backgrounds, during an exploration process involving selective rationality, imagination, memory, analogy and reflexivity. Our object of study is a scientific hydra we seek to understand the mechanisms of the rejuvenation.
