Abstract: "This article examines the influence of occupations on employment patterns. Occupations are considered institutions which provide a link between the educational system and the labor market and vary in their degree of institutionalization. By means of event history analysis, the authors examine the influence of structural occupational characteristics on occupational stability. The main question is how structural traits of occupations enhance or reduce occupational stability. For this purpose 'SIAB' data on the duration of employment upon first entry on the labour market was processed. To assess the institutional variance between occupations, four structural indicators were created on the basis of the 'Berufsordnungen' of the 'KldB88', namely occupational specificity, standardization by training regulation, voluntary certification by private educational providers and representation by an occupational association. The empirical results show that occupational stability varies between different occupations to a large extent. Among the structural indicators, occupational standardization is relevant for occupational stability: stability in occupations which are standardized by a training regulation is higher. The presented results emphasize the importance of occupational traits for employment patterns." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
