Abstract:
"This study examines the impact of environmental sustainability and environmental protection in companies on wages, staff shortages, and some indicators of social sustainability. These relationships have so far proved difficult to investigate due to the availability of data. We are the first to use the newly available information on environmental sustainability from the IAB Establishment Panel 2018 in Germany. The majority of companies state that environmental sustainability and environmental protection are very important or important in their operations. We find that sustainability and environmental protection are more important in large companies and in some industries. Our results show that smaller companies that act more sustainably pay lower wages than companies in which sustainability plays a subordinate role; larger sustainable companies, however, pay comparable wages to non-sustainable companies. Filling positions in more environmentally sustainable companies is easier and companies that value environmental sustainability are also more socially sustainable."
