Abstract: The central aim of this study is an evaluation of the current state of economics in the German-speaking area (Austria, Germany, Switzerland). Therefore we conducted an empirical analysis of all full professors of economics in the chosen countries. The main focus of our analysis is on their publications in economic journals (research profile) as well as on their scientific and political connections (policy making). The data collection was realized through a multilevel survey, which consists of qualitative and quantitative variables. In this study we offer a classification of research profiles and the paradigmatic orientation as well as an analysis of the scientific and politico-economic networks of German-speaking economists.
