International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management, 2009, vol. 4, issue 2, 129-152

Abstract: In the contemporary highly challenging environment, a reliable production system has been considered as a crucial factor for competitiveness. Thus, achieving excellence in maintenance issues has to be treated as a strategic issue for manufacturing organisations to create world-class-manufacturers. The ever increasing demands on the manufacturing organisations have contributed to the complete overhaul of maintenance practices in manufacturing enterprises. Total productive maintenance (TPM) has been accepted as the most promising strategy for improving maintenance performance in order to succeed in a highly demanding market arena. The objective of the study is to investigate the manufacturing performance achievements through strategic TPM initiatives in Indian manufacturing industry. The empirical evidence has been presented to support relationships between critical TPM pillar initiatives and strategic manufacturing performance achievement parameters. These inter-relationships can be used to understand the effect of various TPM success factors towards the realisation of an organisation's objectives of growth and sustainability.
