Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to measure the impact of trademarks over firms´ economic performance using microdata from Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Industrial (INPI), the brazilian intellectual property office, merged to industrial and service (IBGE) and labour (Labour Department) microdata by national or multinational firms according to brazilian Central Bank classification. Our assumptions are: trade-marks have intrinsic value and this value can decrease with INPI´s evaluation time. Thus, the first step is to verify if trademarks give economic returns to firms since its application´s date. The second step is to verify if these returns diminishes over the evaluation period. Both using panel data approach. The results suggest that there are returns to firms with trademark applications and the evaluation period has no effect.
