Patent analysis of a companys technology strength

Abstract: The technology strength expresses the technological competitiveness of a company. One might use a great diversity of technology information to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a firm: expert opinions of the R&D status, market observations, bibliometric data (e. g. information from the technical literature), and last but not least analyses of patent sources. Technology strength-oriented patent indicators are on one hand activity measures referring to quantitative patent characteristics (such as numbers, frequencies, shares etc. of patenting results of a firm), and on the other hand quality measures referring to qualitative patent characteristics (such as breakthrough inventions, international market diffusion, degree of generality of an invention etc.). A case study of a patent-based analysis which relates to US patent data on the sodium-sulphur- battery development, emphasizes the application and the performance of the indicator system.

Zusammenfassung: Die Technologiestärke eines Unternehmens beschreibt dessen technologische Wettbewerbsfähigkeit. Zur Bewertung der Stärken bzw. Schwächen im Technologiebereich können verschiedenste Informationen herangezogen werden: Expertenurteile über das F&E-System, Marktbeobachtungen über Umsätze oder F&E-Budgets, bibliometrische Daten aus dem technischen Schrifttum und schließlich Informationen aus Patentschriften. Patentindikatoren der Technologiestärke sind zum einen Aktivitätskennzahlen über quantitative Größen (wie Anzahl bzw. Anteile von Patentanmeldungen) und zum anderen Qualitätskennzahlen über qualitative Größen (wie Patenterteilungen, Patentfamiliengrößen, Querschnittscharakter von Erfindungen). Das Kennzahlensystem nimmt abschließend auf den empirischen Fall von US-Patentdaten zur Natrium-Schwefel-Batterie-Technologie (Elektroautomobilentwicklung) Bezug.
