Abstract:
Among nations of the world, Japan has been number two in economic size, only next to the United States. In per capita gross domestic product (GDP) at the prevailing exchange rate, Japan was number one in 1993, slightly above Switzerland. In life expectancy at birth, Japan has been number one. The world economy revolves around three centers—the United States, the European Union, and Japan. Japan is the first, and still the only non-Western country that has been able to join the club of advanced countries.
