Analysis of Employment Patterns and the Changing Demographic Structure of Japan

Rikiya Matsukura, Naohiro Ogawa and Robert Clark

Japanese Economy, 2007, vol. 34, issue 1, 82-153

Abstract: Japan's economic development has been achieved through a demographic structure characterized by total fertility rate decline and increasing longevity. These changes in the demographic structure have had an impact on such factors as economic growth, savings rates, and labor productivity, and have helped Japan to grow. However, as the pace of population aging accelerates, due to birthrate decline, and the workforce population decreases, there are concerns that economic growth could suffer. This report uses data from the Employment Status Surveys conducted from 1982 to 2002 to study the potential pool of workers that will be able to sustain Japan's workforce over the next ten years.
