Abstract:
The incentives to accept marginal part-time jobs (Minijobs) for different groups of employees and its impact on labour supply are described in this paper. It is argued that the special legal status of Minijobs in the German welfare state constitutes a specific labour supply. The focus of the paper is an examination of legal regulations and empirical importance of Minijobbers, which differ significantly in their social and socio-legal status. The incentive structures to take up mini-jobs and social consequences for the social protection of spouses, unemployed, pensioners and students are analyzed. In the discussion about the reform of Minijobs it is recommended to consider the diversity of employees concerned.
