Open-Source-Projekte: vom Nischenphänomen zum integralen Bestandteil der Softwareindustrie

Abstract:
Based on a review and evaluation of market data, literature, documents and press releases, this article aims to provide a systematic overview of open-source communities and their socio-economic contexts. The investigations highlight the extent to which free and open-source software development projects today are dependent on the involvement of commercial companies. Over the past fifteen years open-source projects have become deeply entrenched in the information technology sector; they have been stripped of their subversive connotations and have become part of the innovation strategies of all established software providers.
