Abstract:
The Fourth Industrial Revolution is taking place strongly and affecting the production systems of countries worldwide. Investment in research and development (R&D) is seen as a pivotal strategy to promote economic growth and improve the competitiveness of the economies. This paper aims to analyze the investment in R&D in Vietnam, an emerging country that has successfully maintained robust economic growth in recent years. The study result shows that R&D investment in this economy has been still quite limited compared to the other countries in Asia. The low value of R&D investment would lead to a low level of technology in domestic production systems. Therefore, this evidence concludes a huge challenge for promoting high economic growth in the coming period. Finally, the paper provides some policy implications to promote investment in research and development in Vietnam in the coming period.
