Abstract: Great power rivalry and the re-emergence of long-term strategic competition between the United States, China and Russia have intensified the use of coercion in international affairs. This essay examines the theoretical framework of coercion and how coercive measures are designed to achieve strategic superiority. For realist theory, major changes in the balance of power are a powerful source of conflict and war and imply that interests must be maintained through the exercise of power. The essay concludes that power politics is the story of the struggle for dominance through violence and intrigue between nations.
