Abstract: The number of full-time women fs worker is increased in high income family for one decade from 1992 when child care leave policy began in Japan. We focus on this fact, and analysis the effect of children and career interruptions on the family gap and income gap is based on Japanese panel data. The results show that, the negative effect of children on mothers f and couple fs earnings is very small subsequently, when they take formal childcare leaves; apart from this, there is stronger negative effect on mothers f wage when they interrupt work during childcare period. In addition, we confirm that women who take childcare leave take high earnings (mean; 3800thousand yen per year) and their husband are also high (.about 5000thousand yen per year). These results indicate that women fs employment decisions when they have children have long term effects on income gap among family.
