Abstract: Research in the field of sustainable tourism has been on the rise in recent years. Tourism as one of the largest and fastest growing industrial sectors caused serious environmental damage in the past in the form of mass tourism. However, for effective sustainable development, the concept of sustainable tourism needs to be carefully researched, examined, and defined, as the inaccuracy of the concept prevents effective implementation in practice. By reviewing and analysing domestic and foreign relevant literature, we offered a new perspective for understanding the challenges and open issues related to sustainable destination management, which is crucial for development of sustainable tourism. At the same time, we presented some gaps in the field of sustainable tourism planning in Slovenia that can prevent development of Slovenia as a sustainable destination.
