Barcelona Wise City: urban planning and health. Insolation and natural ventilation in the Cerdà grid orientation

Montserrat Pallares-Barbera

Working Paper from Harvard University OpenScholar

Abstract: Useful resources for policymakers in improving the lives and health of individuals in urban settings were channeled through urban planning. However, to date little is known about how complex underlying goals shape organization for getting insolation and natural ventilation in cities around the world, and how concerns for health play out in urban planning projects such expansion of cities, such as Barcelona, Chicago and New York. Through an analysis of Barcelona?s Cerdà Urban Plan, I unravel the most relevant planning variables aimed to get insolation and natural ventilation and the motivations to improve health and comfort of population, thereby addressing to physical and ideological dimensions of the city planning.
