Abstract:
Rural development interventions for poverty reduction by Non-governmental Organisations (NGO) have a long history in Bangladesh. The major goad of NGOs is the promotion of self- employment among the poor through a number of development interventions, both in financiad and in human resource terms. Besides, an added objective is that of improving the position of women. To achieve these broad development goads prograimmes orgainise the poor aind women at the village level. Mobilisation strategies have evolved over time and at present the village- based "informal" group is believed to be the most effective instrument for the delivery of both finainciad (microcredit) aind human resource (awareness raising, health, literacy, skills training) inputs to participating women and households.
