INDIVIDUAL STRATEGIES FOR ACHIEVING WORK-LIFE BALANCE – A CASE STUDY ON ROMANIAN WORKERS

Maria-Lavinia Florea and Anca Borza

Proceedings of the INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE, 2019, vol. 13, issue 1, 845-855

Abstract: This paper aims at identifying the methods, actions, measures, in short, strategies, individuals apply in order to achieve work-life balance (WLB). Based on self-reported WLB strategies of 206 respondents, this paper uses thematical analysis to propose an original classification of work-life balance strategies applied by workers (company employees and self-employed individuals) in Romania. Our classification is linked to the framework of segmentation/integration practices in the WLB literature. We also analyse whether the reported strategies differ based on identity salience (career vs. family orientation), on the perceived level of WLB, on segmentation/integration preferences, or on individual demographical factors. Descriptive statistics is used to superpose the model on our data sample. We also propose further directions for research. As WLB at the individual’s level has positive organisational outcomes, we believe this paper is valuable to the managers and companies that try to understand what WLB practices are used by the workforce, and therefore should be encouraged in an organisational context.
