Abstract: The evolution of the disciplines studying the innovation phenomenon (especially economics, European studies, geography and sociology) generated, in the last decades, an extended amount of theoretical approaches and methodologies aiming to foster the in-depth description of a complex reality. This paper presents a synthesis of the approaches used nowadays to describe the phenomenon of regional innovation in the context of economic competitiveness and proposes a mix of methods to be validated regarding innovative industrial clusters? analyses. A specific focus of the paper is on defining the role and importance of qualitative and quantitative mixed methodologies in investigating innovation at industrial cluster levels.
