Abstract:
This article examines the impact of tourism development on carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions for Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries by particularly exploring the role of energy markets in the environment–tourism relation. We find that tourism growth raises more CO 2 emissions in the future, and that greater CO 2 emissions return a lagged and negative impact on tourism development. Our empirical results suggest that an improvement in energy efficiency simultaneously benefits the sustainability of both tourism development and the environment.
