Abstract: Abstract This study aims to examine the determinants of farmers’ chemical pesticides purchase behavior with the help of an extended version of the theory of planned behavior with descriptive norms, risk perception, and awareness of consequences as additional constructs. The study adopted a cross-sectional approach by conducting face-to-face structured interviews with 234 Indian farmers. The data were analyzed using CB-SEM. From the results, descriptive norms emerged as the strongest predictor of farmers’ purchase intentions, followed by attitude. Based on the findings, we offer some theoretical and policy implications. The use of chemical pesticides has undoubtedly helped in meeting the food needs by controlling pests with low labor requirements, but this has come with the cost of negative effects on the environment and human health. Despite unreasonable usage of chemical pesticides, research focusing on factors influencing the purchase of these products is scarce. To contain the detrimental impact on environment, this article investigates farmers chemical pesticides purchase behavior.
