Abstract: Abstract The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) faces daunting challenges in the form of employee retention and attrition, as well as the mandate to successfully and effectively integrate new technologies and constant changes to screening protocols. What motivates a TSO to perform effectively and consistently as a dedicated long term employee? The aim of this study was to explore those motivating factors and the relations among the individual values and preferred working conditions of TSOs, factors associated with high-performing (HP) workplaces and two performance indices. Results showed that individual values and preferred working conditions predicted perceptions of quality within HP workplace factors which predicted annual performance ratings; and showed that perceptions of the importance of HP workplace factors predicted covert testing scores. Results further showed that individual values that predicted HP quality factors reflected the annual performance ratings that distinguished higher from lower performers. Implications for supervisors and managers are discussed.
