Abstract:
Abstract In this study, we examine the growth of the agricultural sector in Bihar after its bifurcation into Bihar and Jharkhand in 2000. The paper is based on secondary data collected from various sources for the years 2000–2016. It uses the simple OLS method to estimate the determinants of overall growth of the agricultural sector. It also uses the growth accounting approach to decompose agricultural growth into area, price, technology, and price effect. The results indicate that diversification towards high-value crops and technological improvement were the main drivers of agricultural growth in Bihar. In addition, increased fertilizer uses per hectare, capital formation, and cropping intensity have further driven agricultural growth in Bihar.
