More thoughts on the historiography of transition on the Zambian Copperbelt

Journal of Southern African Studies, 1996, vol. 22, issue 2, 309-312
Abstract:
A debate about the historiography of migrancy and urbanization on the Zambian Copper‐belt has recently been published in the Journal of Southern African Studies, commencing with a two‐part article by James Ferguson (Vols 16, 3 and 16, 4). This was followed by a response from Hugh Macmillan in Vol. 19, 4, and another paper by Ferguson in Vol. 20, 4. This reply by Macmillan argues that there is no definitive version of the historiography and that there are at least two ways of analysing the processes of migrancy and urbanization which have occurred. A short bibliographical note from Ferguson on recent relevant literature follows.
