Abstract: This article focuses on European FDIs (foreign direct investments) in the Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) and their determinants. FDI now account for a large share of GDP in host economies and can help them to catch up with EU countries, by transforming and diversifying their economic activities. Our econometric analysis covers the 1993-2001 period and shows that differences in unit wage costs between EU member countries and the CEECs have favoured FDI flows at the beginning of the transition but their importance declined. They ultimately turn out to be secondary factors in FDI flows. The choice of the privatization method, in the early 1990's, also explains why some countries attracted more FDIs than others. More recently, the perspectives of EU integration favoured the market size, geographic proximity and the home country's technological intensity as the main determinants of Western-Eastern European FDI flows.
