Abstract:
Innovation in destinations has been recognized as one of the main drivers of local development. In accordance with the stakeholder theory, in managing the competitiveness and innovativeness of a destination, it becomes crucial to consider the perceptions of the relevant stakeholders within the destination. However, only a few studies have investigated destination innovativeness as perceived by different types of actors applying a multi-stakeholder approach; moreover, up to now, no studies have included the perspective of trade associations and tourism consortia together with the DMO’s perspective. This study aims to investigate the perceived needs and obstacles to destination innovativeness identified by representatives of DMOs and trade associations, as well as entrepreneurs with leading roles in tourism consortia, taking a naturalistic inquiry approach. By exploring their perspectives, this study seeks to uncover critical insights that can inform decisionmaking processes and facilitate the development of innovative practices within tourism destinations. The present study was undertaken in Italian Alpine destinations of the Piedmont Region. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Among the various results emerge the relevance of the role of tourism consortia in co-designing project opportunities and educational interventions, as they can target the specific needs of the consortium firms.
