Does Intelligence Improve Environmental Sustainability? An Empirical Test

Raufhon Salahodjaev

Sustainable Development, 2016, vol. 24, issue 1, 32-40

Abstract: We explore the effect of intelligence on environmental sustainability, using data from more than 150 nations over the period 2000–2014, taking into consideration various control variables as documented in related studies. Our measure of intelligence is national IQ scores. The results show that a 10‐point increase in national IQ scores yields a 12‐point increase in sustainability, measured by the Environmental Performance Index. We also document that the intelligence–environment association varies with GDP per capita levels. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment
