Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics, 2021, vol. 34, issue 2, 137-146 Abstract: This paper comments on Asad Zaman’s lead paper (Zaman, 2021) in this journal and is divided into three parts. The first part summarizes very briefly my reaction to Zaman’s paper, while delving deeper into areas only briefly touched by Zaman, such as the role of physics, and the importance of knowledge. Part two answers this Journal’s clarion call to action, by discussing what is at stake, the importance of metrics, and the challenges and opportunities facing Islamic economics. The third part moves us forward using Zaman’s endorsement of action-oriented work and action-oriented research as a steppingstone to first recognize, and then overcome the significant obstacles in implementing a viable and reconceptualized economics, one which can adequately provision for all. In this regard, a significant obstacle is juxtaposing concepts as binary opposites, e.g., cooperation versus competition, service versus profit, quantitative versus qualitative. However, these concepts could be better understood as different but having a deeper, more intricate relationship. Viewing ostensible opposites in a non-binary way as complimentary pairs is especially useful in fomenting dialogue and developing empathy (and even a humility) especially with those whom we disagree. And this is especially critical as we move forward in confronting contemporary challenges that human societies face. A lot is at stake, and we have a narrowing window with which to act. تُعَلِّق هذه المُساهمة على الورقة الرئيسة التي أَعدَّها أَسد زمان (Zaman, 2021) المنشورة في هذا العدد من المجلة، وقد تم تقسيم المُساهمة إلى ثلاثة أجزاء. يُقدم الجزء الأول بإيجاز ردة فعل الكاتب على ورقة أَسد زمان، مع تعمق أكثر في المجالات التي لم يتطرق إليها الباحث إلا عرضًا، كدور الفيزياء وأهمية العلم. يُجيب الجزء الثاني من الورقة على دعوة هيئة تحرير المجلة الواضحة للعمل المطلوب، من خلال مناقشة ما هي المسألة الجوهرية في موضوع منتدى النقاش؟ وأهمية المعايير، والتحديات والفرص التي تواجه الاقتصاد الإسلامي. ينتقل بنا بعد ذلك الجزء الثالث إلى الأمام بالاتفاق مع دعوة أَسد زمان للعمل الفعلي والبحث المُوجه نحو العمل كنقطة انطلاق للاعتراف أولاً، ثم للتغلب ثانيًا على العقبات الكبيرة في تنفيذ سياسات اقتصادية قابلة للتطبيق وإعادة المفاهيم، التي يُمكن أن تُوفر الأشياء الضرورية للجميع بشكل مناسب. وفي هذا الصدد، هناك عقبة كبيرة تتمثل في أهمية تجاور تناول المفاهيم كثنائيات مُتضادة أو مُصادمة لبعضها؛ ومن أمثلة ذلك: التعاون في مقابل المنافسة، والخدمة في مقابل الربح، والكمية في مقابل النوعية. ومع ذلك، يمكن تحليل هذه المفاهيم بشكل أفضل على أنها مُختلفة، ولكن تربطها علاقة ببعضها بشكل أعمق وأكثر تعقيدًا. إن النظر إلى الأضداد الظاهرية بطريقة تتجاوز "الثنائية المُتضادة أو المتقابلة" كثنائيات مُكملة هو مفيد بشكل خاص في إثارة الحوار وتطوير التعاطف (وحتى التواضع) خاصة مع أولئك الذين نختلف معهم. وهذا أمر بالغ الأهمية بشكل خاص ونحن نمضي قدمًا لمواجهة التحديات الراهنة التي تُواجه المجتمعات الإنسانية. هناك الكثير مما يجب فعله ولدينا نافذة ضيقة للعمل.
