Abstract:
It is generally acknowledged in the international business literature that competitive potentials of firms and nations depend partly on the configuration of resource that they possess as well as their linkages with institutions, markets, and other firms internationally. It has also been argued that high growth-oriented firms are more able to take advantage of such potentials. This paper explores the extent to which these arguments can be applied to the analysis of the economic development challenges and potentials of Sub-Sahara African countries. To this end, the paper develops an integrated framework for analysing the relationships between the key determinants. The discussions suggest that aspects of the African civil society and culturescan be growth constraining and thereby deny nascent entrepreneurial firms the opportunity to leverage the resources that their local as well as international business environments may offer.
