Abstract:
Analysis of the evolution of the business groups which have been controlling the production of sugarcane and its derived commodities in the state of Sao Paulo, showing their changing participation in three periods. The first, which lasted from the end of the 19th century to the year 1930, witnessed a strong participation of foreign capital, together with the presence of some large national groups and various isolated small producers. In the second period (1930-1990), characterized by state intervention, there was an emergence and expansion of numerous new groups, formed by Italian immigrants and/or their descendents, linked with the local production of Industrial equipment and a centralized commercialization system. The last one (from 1990 on) has been featured by a subdivision within these groups and the entry of a few others, together with an incipient return of foreign capital, in the context of increased competition which followed the industry's deregulation.
