Abstract: This paper investigates the role of theory in the historiographic discourse. While there is a general agreement that historiography should be based on documents and that it should prohibit anachronisms, there is little consensus about the role of theory in the production of historiography. This paper approaches the subject taking into account different points of view on the relations between theory and history, and focusing particularly on the reception of Marx's theory of industrialization by the so-called "Proto-Industrialization School".
