Abstract: This article gives a common review of the history of managerial thought in Russia in the late XIX th and the early XX th century dealing with the main problems of self-management and self-development. The modern situation requires new approaches to studying of socio-cultural, socio-economic and especially socio-psychological basis of self-management in the interpretation of the famous Russian scientist N.I. Kareev.
