Abstract:
The intensity of economic integration processes on the African continent is extremely high in its eastern part: here, within the framework of the East African Community (EAC), a common market is being formed between Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Somalia. An integral part of this common market is the common labour market, which is developing, in part, under the influence of macroeconomic factors, which manifest themselves at the country and regional levels. A strong correlation between total labour productivity and labour productivity in the agricultural and non-material sectors, as well as the share of employment in the non-material sector was found; a moderate correlation was noted with the share of employment in the industrial sector and the minimum wage. Uneven macroeconomic development is identified using the “core-periphery†concept. Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda were the “core†of the EAC for most of the period 1999– 2024 owing to the more significant structural transformation of their economies and their significant involvement in regional integration policies. Projections indicate that Uganda, the only EAC member country currently classified as semi-peripheral, will soon join this group.Â
