Abstract: Cardiovascular disease (CV) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists are new agents that are very promising because they affect many cardiovascular risk factors, apart from improving the glycemic control. Based on the published LEADER and SUSTAIN-6 trials liraglutide and semaglutide have shown cardiovascular benefit and could be reasonable options as second line agents for patients with CV disease.
