Cost and Access to Drug Treatment within the United States Prison System

Abstract: This paper explores multiple studies and articles regarding the cost and access to substance use disorder treatment in United States prisons and correctional institutions. The articles make clear that there is a large need for treatment in the correctional system and that proper drug treatment can be a very cost effective in reducing recidivism. The research shows that there are multiple barriers to access but do not have a clear consensus on how to remove those barriers and promote easier access to treatment
