New Benzothiazole-Thiazolidinone hybrids containing Phthalimidoxy and Ethoxyphthalimide: Design, Synthesis and Pharmacological Assay

Abstract: In an endeavor to find a new class of antimicrobial agents, a series of 2-(2-{2-[3-benzothiazol-2-yl-2-(4-substituted-phenyl)-4-oxo-thiazolidin-5-ylmethyl]-benzoimidazol-1-yl}-ethoxy)-isoindole-1,3-dione (4a-c) and 1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl-2-(3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-(4- substituted phenyl)-4-oxothiazolidin-5-yl) acetate (6a-c) have been designed and synthesized from benzothiazol-2-yl-(4-substituted-benzylidene)-amine (1a-c). Structural elucidation of the synthesized compounds is accomplished by elemental analysis, spectral data (FT-IR, 1H-NMR & mass) and chemical tests. These have been assayed for their antimicrobial activity against pathogenic S. aureus, S. pyogenus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa (bacterial species) and A. niger, C. albicans, A. clavatus (Fungal species) (Figure 1). Some of hybrids were found to be equipotent or more potent than the reference drugs.
