Effect of Urbanisation on Sustainable Development in Ghana: Does Regulatory Quality Matter?

Abstract: This study was carried out to determine the effect of urbanization on sustainable development, and find out whether regulatory quality af-fects the relationship between urbanization and sustainable develop-ment in Ghana. Secondary data was used in a regression analysis and covered the period from 2002 to 2022. Findings from the analysis showed that increased urbanization has contributed significantly and positively to sustainable development, but enhanced regulatory quality has been detrimental to the promotion of sustainable development in the country. The positive contribution of urbanization to sustainable development in Ghana could be explained by the promotion of human capital development in urban centres. The study recommends a review of the existing regulations to make them more targeted at natural re-source conservation in the country.
