Abstract: South Africa (SA) has entered into some trade and non-trade agreements in the period 2015-2022 with several economic groups and this has raised questions if there are any benefits or costs of these arrangements. Specifically, have there been any meaningful economic benefits available for SA belonging to Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) group? Further, are there any envisaged benefits from belonging to the African Intercontinental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA)? The stylized trade facts suggest that SA may benefit from the BRICS group if they focus areas on industrialisation.
