Abstract: Since the African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) was approved by US Congress in 2000, it has since been hailed as a magic trade partnership tool which will make Africa great (or should I say great again?). It is true that a small number of African countries have benefitted significantly from the agreement. These include South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya Ethiopia and a few oil and mineral-rich countries. However, it is important to point out that the US is not Africa's largest trading partner and that all successful trade partnerships are based on trust and mutual respect.
