Abstract:
This paper aims to identify the main causes of criminality in the brazilian state of Sergipe and is divided in four sections: the first presents a introduction to the topic under study; the second section discusses Economics contributions for a criminality better understanding as well as its links with related sciences; the third section presents data related to the state of Sergipe; the fourth and the last section reports results from a group of empirical studies which have that state as the focus. In general, models showed low explanatory power for the homicides dynamics in spite of being able to provide a good interpretation to criminal recidivism. Results, by and large, also indicate no presence of spatial spillover mechanisms.
