Weathering Violence in India: Climate Shocks and Spousal Abuse

No 360945, 2025 AAEA & WAEA Joint Annual Meeting, July 27-29, 2025, Denver, CO from Agricultural and Applied Economics Association

Abstract: This study examines how weather shocks affect women’s exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) in rural India. I link geocoded weather data to women’s reports of IPV from the 2015–16 and 2019–21 rounds of India’s National Family Health Survey. Exposure to drought and extreme heat during the primary growing season significantly increases IPV. Growing-season drought raises the overall IPV prevalence by 10.8%, while a one standard deviation increase in the number of days with mean temperature above 30◦C raises it by 17.9%. Consistent with an income channel, access to formal finance appears to mitigate the effect of drought on IPV. Finally, the substantially larger effects of humid-heat extremes relative to dry-heat extremes in the non-growing season is consistent with a more immediate, heat-induced physiological stress channel.
