Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to give some insights into the modeling activity used to support the outlook and policy process in Economics at the USDA. Several characteristics and objectives of the USDA outlook process are discussed to lay groundwork for the modeling systems that have evolved over time. The first part of the paper gives a brief overview, of the organizational structure, the second part deals with the outlook and policy process, the third area covers the models developed or under development and the final area discusses problems encountered in maintaining an operational unit in the USDA environment.
