Agricultural District Programs Provide Flexible Options for Farmland Preservation

Abstract: American farmland is disappearing at a rapid rate. According to a 2022 study sponsored by the American Farmland Trust (AFT), 18.4 million acres of farmland will be lost by 2040 if current development trends continue. Under a “runaway sprawl” scenario, AFT projects that 24.4 million farmland acres, an area roughly the size of Indiana, would be lost by 2040 (Hunter et al., 2022).
