The condition of commercial bank lenders to agriculture

Abstract:
A commentary states that beginning in the latter part of 1998, less robust farm earnings trimmed the returns of many suppliers of farm inputs, and commercial banks that lend to farmers saw their financial results affected as well. The current episode of weak returns in the farm sector seems to have begun to affect the balance sheets of some commercial banks. However, these banks typically maintain a large capital cushion, and indeed, many have been adding to their allowance for loan losses in recent quarters. Most seem prepared to deal with a shortfall in loan repayments.
