Abstract:
This project proposes incorporating the production of ethanol fuel from solid waste as an integral component of the Puerto Rico Solid Waste Management Authority's waste disposal plan. It proposes the use of a new innovative technology utilizing transgenic bacterium that is more efficient in transforming'organic waste material into ethanol than traditional methods. The feasibility of adding additional sources of biomass, such as energy cane, to be used in conjunction with solid waste, will be investigated also. Ethanol use will be analyzed as an additive to gasoline under three alternative markets situations; as a gasoline substitute, as an octane enhancer, and as an oxygenate additive in both the Puerto Rican and mainland U.S. fuel markets.
