Consumption of Fruits and Vegetables in the United States: An Index to Some Sources of Statistics

Mamie I. Herb

No 319802, Agricultural Economics Bibliography from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Excerpts from the Foreword: This compilation lists the sources of statistics of consumption of fruits and vegetables in the United States. The statistics which they contain are described in detail, giving for each commodity named the area and period of time covered in the study, and the type of consumption -whether total, per capita, per family, or per adult equivalent. Care has been taken to use in the bibliography the terms that were used to express consumption in the study described, as "utilization", "disappearance", "sales", "unloads", etc. Except in a few instances, statistics of receipts of commodities on given markets have not been included. In the exceptions that were made, some indication was found in the study that the receipt figures were also regarded as the quantity consumed and these figures were therefore included. Statistics of unloads have been included because they were considered a "good index" to the quantity of food consumed in the cities for which unloads were reported. The summaries of unloads in the Statistical Bulletins and in the Yearbooks of the United States Department of Agriculture are described in detail.
