L'histoire de la vulgarisation agricole en France avant 1966

Léon Rolland

Économie rurale, 1984, vol. 159

Abstract: Agricultural advisory work is studied for each major period of French history starting in 1879 when a post of teacher of agriculture was created in each «département». These played an important part in the creation of farmer's organizations (unions, mutual insurance, cooperatives). After 1919, the creation of farm development boards in each department provided the extension services with increased means. The boards were, however, disbanded in 1935. In the dynamic period after 1945, numerous activities developed often based on group methods of extension. There were conflicts between proponents of various methods and much competition for power to control the extension machinery. The official extension officers were however side tracked in a reorganization of the ministry of Agriculture and had to accept that control of extension activities be handed over to the farm organizations.
