Abstract: For many years those responsible for the economic policy of many socialist countries considered rural development along the same lines as urban development - the growth of « farm-towns » with blocks of flats. But at present many policies are more interested in the development of life in villages detached houses with gardens and a greater diversification of activity, in order to find more work on the spot for the surplus labour force (tourism, building trades, food industries, and even other forms of industry). The villages and districts are invited to collaborate actively in this policy. In certain countries one sees a certain decentralization of responsibility. The next few years will show what influence these objectives will have on present methods of centralized planning.
