Abstract:
This analysis tries to evaluate the effects of the reinforcement of the policy of direct agricultural subsidies on the structure of farm incomes and on the development of the differences which have resulted during the last 10 years in France. In 1990-91, 80% of the farms received a direct subsidy of up to 26 600 F on average, 24% of the farming income. Subsidies play an increasing role in the make up of farm incomes for some categories of producers. In 1991, subsidies represented half of the income in mountain farming, 75% in cattle farming and 100% in sheep farming. Overall the subsidies have the effect of reducing the large differences in income between regions and types of production the rising of inequalities during the decade 1980-1990. The method of allocating subsidies which depends of the economic capacity of the farms limits their use to compensate inequalities.
